OK, I think mine might have been playing on the third floor of the trade union building on Stockton Blvd (a pretty cool party room with a stage, a long bar and several pool tables), in the mid 70's for that motorcycle club I probably shouldn't name (the guitarist went to high school with their chapter pres). They had the driveways blocked off and I had to show them my drums to get in, so it had the feel of going to another place where there wouldn't be any outsiders (like the police?). After some initial joking around they turned out to be a great crowd, and tipped us for playing until 3am. The funny thing I remember was that it was supposed to be "girlfriend" night for them, and one of them brought his wife, which was apparently a breach of etiquitte that led to a spirited discussion and some ill feelings towards that member.

If it's the same club I am thinking of, we played one of their parties and they were one of the coolest groups we have ever played for. From my experience with them over the years nothing but first class when it comes to bands. When we were loading in or shall I say tried to load in, they told us to kick back and they had some of the younger members(?) do it for us. When it came time to eat there was a pretty big line and the president came up to us and said you guys go to the front and get served. We were very hesitant, so he walked us up and all was good. No problems at all.

I once played a Mob Wedding. I had to drive to a certain location, call a number, and only then would I get the rest of the directions. Winding up the road, guys in suits holding automatic weapons were leaning against trees. Lots of Nevada politicians were there, too.
Played "Nudestock" two years in a row. You tell yourself going in that it's no big deal, but the heebie-jeebies get you about 15 minutes in. Once you get past that, it's okay. Just avoid the restaurant.

I imagine some of you have played Laguna Del Sol, the clothing optional resort near Sloughhouse.
I played there several times including a Nude Rears Eve. Ever see a tuxedo jock strap?
Heebie Jeebies is a good word for it. I know that kind of place is marketed as a wholesome family resort. Lots of pictures of naked volleyball games ect. But I always found it to have a pretty sleazy undertone, I would want to take two showers when I got home.

haha, joe i got asked to play there a couple years ago by a well known local band and i made up excuse to not do it...dont know why would bother me since I saw a full on bump and grind once at a dive in the Tenderloin in SF, wow..these 2 girls were really putting on a show, i could barely play..after the gig there was a ho-fight going on out front with a couple girls going at it and their pimp trying to pull them apart. They had a bigger crowd than we did...

Think of it like this, people spend money to see things we see while we are getting paid.

One of my strangest gigs was being hired for the night to play harp for a blues band (around 1966-67) within the broken down carcass of an old ferryboat, the Charles Van Damme, which was "docked" in the mud in Sausalito. It wasn't a real club, but the room was big, the band was on a low stage/riser, and the mandatory psychedelic liquid light show and a glittering, glass disco ball kept the place spinning. It is memorable for two additional reasons.
First, because the old ferryboat was also the home of Juanita's Galley (a greasy spoon)...before it suffered the inevitable, "accidental" fire that seemed to occur at every restaurant run by the feisty, notorious, 300+ lb. muumuu-wearing, ever short on mortgage payments, always yelling-at-patrons, restaurateur, Juanita Musson.
Secondly, someone liked us so much that they paid us to go play after the gig at the long gone and forgotten "Vi's Drake Club" on Sir Francis Drake Blvd. in Fairfax. This was over 40 years ago, I was a teenager, and I had no idea until that night that Lesbian bars even existed. Welcome to the real world!

I forgot this one..I was living in Austin, late 70's, my band got a gig at the Austin State Hospital, we showed up and there was like 50 guys there to help unload, we played in the old gymnasium, like a HS gym, we cranked up as loud as we could, they went nuts (excuse the pun...), they were stage diving, dry-humping, a guy was wearing a red firemans hat with a light that was going round, one of the best gigs ever!! After each song was like this huge roar >>'ARGGGHHHHH!!!!' The ward attendents told me later that it was the most peaceful night they ever had, after the show all the residents went to their dorms and passed out.

Strangest place I ever played was the "clothing optional" resort. It's really true what they say, the people that want to walk around naked are the LAST people you want to see naked! Try playing for 3 hours without looking at all the sagging flesh. ugh.

Mausoleums are always a creepy and usually a smelly/stuffy place to play.... The residents aren't hard to please and it seems like everyone else - myself included - is dying to get out of there ;-)

I played at a party for Native Americans. Our bassist hooked us up with the gig, because he is in fact, Native American. Well needless to say, the majority of the crowd was way older than our demographic (we play punk/hardcore) and the supporting musicians played mellow music. It was fun, yet very weird.

I played River's Edge last night and it was the most stressful gig I have ever played. Three different guys from the audience came up and stood next to me tryin to talk to me touching my gear, moving my bass, tryin to make me face a different direction a constant chatter in my ear. There was almost a brawl and the police came and tackled some guy to the floor and the guitar player yelled and cussed at me. On top of that I was having cable problems. I am still a little wigged out and tired. NEVER AGAIN
