I have seen no flyers, no promotion, shit they dont even list the shows on their My space. oh wait they did put a 1/2"x 1" add in SNR. and we wonder why bars stop booking original bands.

Malcolm Bliss you are Douche Bags. Stop ass raping our scene. The same weekend does not make a whole lotta sense unless you know you could draw people and we all know you can never guarantee a draw. You do need to remember the club booked them so the club must think they do good, the club is hurting for original bands or it's a pay to play thing and if that's the case too bad for the band for doing that type of gig. Peace!!

In this case the clubs have no idea what the So-called Promoters are doing. They just fill holes and take a cut for doing absolutely nothing except opening the hand to take the money from bands. oh did i mention i fucking hate Most Promoters.
Quote taken from a local Booking Agent:i would like to meet new and upcoming bands who are lookin to book, i would also like to meet new venues in california who are looking for a booking agent for their venue and venues who like tours coming through.
Translation: Looking to exploit new bands who dont know who i am and dont realize that they should be paid for their hard work. Will also book your touring band at a shitty coffee bar and never even show up or answer your calls.

Since the beginning of Rock, there has been an absolute requirement for bands to include cover songs in their repertoire. Let's look at CCR's 'Suzie Q', The Doors' 'Back Door Man', Janis Joplin's 'Summertime' and 'Ball and Chain'...not to mention Jimi Hendrix's 'All Along The Watchtower'. If we had it our way, every band would have to do a Bob Dylan song in order to even qualify as real Rock. A modern band should not even be playing music if they fail to see the significance in paying tribute to those who came before them. The obsequious blues song is needed in order to gain said band any credibility at all.

i disagree with defiance in that original bands have their place in sac. to say that they must play some covers is ridiculous. in some cases a mix of covers and originals. in my yrs of live music ive found that some clubs want original and some want covers some want both. to generalize about anything in music is a huge mistake. like anything else its what you do with it that counts

Yep, I play in a few all original bands and we do just fine. i wouldn't really want to play in a cover band. I might do it if I was playing just for money, but i like real songs that are about real things to someone near to me. i don't know about a Stairway to Heaven, sounds like bullshit to me, and Summertime is not a Janis Joplin song.
I play plenty of tribute to the ones before me, those are my dad, and all the mentors I grew up with over the past 55 years. I didn't know Jimi Hendrix, didn't know Jim Morrison. They both died from being too...well should we say artistic. I'm alive, and have no desire to go with them wherever they are, their songs were good, but they were their songs, not mine.
It is said that music is all about the story, and I agree, and if the story ain't mine somehow, its not music for me, its just jamming and that's okay for jamming and jams or pickin sessions. I want to tell my own stories, and help others tell their stories. I'll leave you to tell CCR's story

I'll leave you to tell CCR's story Whether I'm playing all originals, all covers, or any other buffet in between, I'm always glad and obligated to tell people my influences. (Hey, the customers may actually supply leads for our set lists instead of us thinking we must always come up with everything ourselves.) If you like storytelling, I'll tell you of my favorite CD named "Storytelling" from a jazz violinist whose progressions and solos I use anywhere and everywhere, including vampings during hard rock gigs. Frequently, I state "If nothing can be finer than the taste of Aunt Jemima, then how can I be flaunty, when I'm quoting Jean-Luc Ponty?" Of course, one of my primary influences is that keyboard guy who borrows and steals from everybody else named Keith Emerson. In my case, I happen to be Jewish, making me even more of a bargain hunter.

No one ever said anything about original bands not having "their place in sac". What was actually stated is that there isn't even such a thing as an 'original' Rock band. It has all been done before, the same blueprint has existed since Rock's inception, namely the emergence of Elvis and his unique combining of Bluegrass and Delta Blues. Using the word 'Rock' implies that you are building upon a foundation which has etched into it the names of all the greats from the 50s onward through the 90s when Rock finally bowed out. No new influences in Rock have emerged since that time. The focus is on paying tribute to the great black Blues artists that made virtually all of today's music possible. The artists of the 60s knew this, thus creating the unchangeable foundation for today's Rock music. Despite all of this, forcing Rock bands to include covers simply can not be done; it is something they should want to do. As the saying goes, "People make their own heaven and their own hell". These bands insisting upon 'original-ness' just shouldn't expect to make a lasting impact in Rock or have any future relevance without first learning about the necessary use of the cover.
