???I need to restring my 51 Fender and thought I'd ask for opinions on new strings, especially since there is such a wide variety of brands, types, selections and costs I play mainly rock, blues and some country and love the deep strong bottom sound of the old P-Bass and want to continue with flat wound strings. So here are my questions: What brand do you like and why? What brand don't you like because of an issue? Where would you go to buy them? (store, internet, other outlet?) Thanks in advance.....

I like the basic Fender flats, that are abt $25-$30 from Musicians Friend, they will last at least a year IMO, and they feel really good and will fit your bass perfectly. Cant remember the gauges, the low E requires a bit of elbow grease to wrap around the post. Sorry to pomote an online store, but Ive always found they have the best deals going, i usually bundle them w/ something else I need, cords, stands, etc. Ive tried more expensive ones, and i think these Fenders are the best value. BTW..I've asked for Flats at local 'music' stores, and had tattooed dumbasses look at me with a blank stare, and one smirked at me and said 'why would anyone want those?' !!

one more thing-you may have to get your bass set up for these, to get the correct intonation, unless you are confident doing it yourself, as they tend to be heavier and may not sit right in the saddle.

I like Thomastik but expensive. Daddario are good also but I use mainly Rotosound on my 55 RI. All flatwound of course.

;D I do appreciate the suggestions. Now I'll check out the various on-line stores and get them ordered. I will be sure to publish the final results. Thanks again.

Hi lowtone,
I have D'Addario chrome XL flatwounds on my Fender Jazz and really like them. They are a good balance, the mids don't get lost in the mix, and I can still get some highs if necessary, and they have a nice, fat, warm tone. I use regular light guage, .045, .065, .080, .100. I play in a rock trio and they get the job done nicely!
