Found this group the other day, but don't remember what site. It's for Sac area musicians who want to get together just for fun, jamming, food, dance, etc. So if you think it might be cool, check it out. Dan'o :} www.meetup.com/Sacramento-Jam-Session/

Been to a few. As any of this type of generally unstructured meetings, some are better than others. This group is beginning to "profile" sessions to give potential attendees a better feel for what to expect. Hopefully this will help musicians of all levels and preferences to get the bet fit most enjoyment.

I'd like word to get around that our Wednesday jam at Louies really caters to musicians that want to "raise their bar". I suggest bringing CDs with you to share with others at the jam so that you can enjoy playing some great music that goes a bit beyond the typical I-IV-V. Sometimes even a I-VI-II-V is a welcome diversion from the expected. While I love blues (I'll play them till I die...), I'd be WAY more excited to hear a jammer come in with an arrangement of Captain Beyonds' "Dancing Madly Backwards" than another rendition of "Pride and Joy". Come and play what's in your heart, it's what you'll do best!!

CD? how 'bout an iPOD or MP3 cable or portable speakers... Anyway, sounds like I'll need to drop in to Louie's one day.

I meant CDs (or CDRs) that you can give to friends to take home and learn the arrangments of songs that aren't lumpty-dumpty I-V-IVs. However, giving iPods away at jams that have been pre-loaded with songs you'd like to play is "raisin' the bar" for sure :-)!! I love it!! I look forward to meeting you!

the host was cool and yes there seems to be some confusion with the jam/open mike concept. as i know it jams were where musicians went to play music, it was for musicians, sometimes the music was grt, sometimes not so much,by midnight the stage would be jammed. unlike somw i went to play, not show off my guitar and play my best tunes, jams used to be where the music drifted out of the box and took on different modes and aspects. jam doesnt always mean blues and i think we all came here from cl to get away from youre rants defiance. i never had a jam host turn on me, maybe its all in your attitude

Since I come from a different type of music that is all acoustic instruments, I thought jams were where a bunch of pickers get together on the porch and pick tunes, not for anyone in particular, just for fun. I have been to a couple of the blues jams here and I always have had a great time. I am also a frequent open mic attendee, and love those too. I really don't care what it is, if I get to play some music, I'm happy.
It sounds like, Defiance, you have had some bad experiences at the blues jams, and that's too bad, but attitude is everything. Maybe forget what you think you know and show up again, but bring your game face dude, and play whatever you get to play as well as it can be done, then go home satisfied with yourself, because nobody else gives two cents or a shit. I always come home happy, because when I play, I freakin tear it up, and no one could ever take that away from me, and frankly I don't know of anyone in the world that would want to
On Monday nights at open mic Fox and Goose there is usually a jam in the back room, all acoustic, or on the front steps outside if it's warm enough. And there is some great music by some great players. Very impromptu and bring what you got, blues, bluegrass, old-time, jazz, rap, we don't care. But there is criteria; if you aren't any good, don't be loud and LISTEN and learn

As usual, well put, Brother Ken. Steve and I still marvel at playin I Want to Be Sedated with your mandolin.
I have given Defiance an open invitation to come to any jam I am on and try it again. It still stands, we will work to good you have a good experience, that's what we do. Most come in with the desire to make it work, with positive attitudes, and that is the ticket to a great time.
All this pissing and moaning about the "scene" puzzles me. I feel like a part of a great musical family here, with much love received and given. I guess you get what you give.

Weekly Thursday evenings - mixed bag music jams in Walnut Grove Park at Market and C Streets - 6 to 9 pm as long as the weather stays nice. C'mon down. Bring any instruments that don't require electricity. Blues, folk, rock, bluegrass, whatever you can contribute. Potluck food or beverages are welcome, too, but don't feel obligated. Questions, call 916-776-1000. Thanks, hope some of you can make it!

Hey, just found the site ...read the comments here and related it to my self ...I went to Skip's Weekend Warriors. This is the first time I got out of the house for many years. .. I play nearly everyday, but choose to create my own music and not play cover songs, so just getting out there with others will be a challenage for me. Still musician's that did not tune to each other , with persons that wanted to play the songs they knew to sing, or the only ones they knew or one person picking all 3 songs. I felt like a sprint runner being made to compete in a 3 legged race. I know, I am in there program and not mine. and I would be glad to work with any, to bring a good product up ... I went to network with capible musicians, actually I need a drummer and bass and keyboard would be nice and eventually a good singer songwriter ....and in regard to I-IV-V progressions , if all you are playing is chords, it is going to get boring after 2 minutes .. I can take a binary progression (2 chords) and expand with leads and it can become most interesting and that some times expands the chord selection. Many great classicial composers did and I am sure many of see this true as well

Metal, The beauty of Skips Weekend Warrior program is that it helps get musicians back into playing again. It is also a good way to network and meet other players who may be into what you want to play. No, the signup jam isn't going to sound like much but its really not designed to. Its more to break the ice and get a little noise made. Unfortunately, you'll also not get to play originals during the Warrior round, but with 4 rehearsals, its not always easy to learn a brand new tune. I've been lucky that I used Warriors to find myself a band and in that band we are working on a few originals as well as covers that we like. Making yourself available to the widest group of people does get your name out and once you've started networking you can more easily gravitate to musicians of like mind. Good luck and never stop making music.
