What is your favorite place to play and why?
Mine has to be On The Y because its a small and easy to fill with people plus the owners are very cool.

Summer time at Crawdads on the river, 1) They provide the PA (load in/out is a B...)
2) The absolute hilarity of watching the drunk people come off the river and try to dance!!!

I like Swabbies, because my kids can run around and dig in the dirt like the animals they are.

In Sacramento I like Marilyn's, mostly because of the staff, and the room is big enough for a huge crowd.(I hate the parking though) But for sound, I like Boyd Luthiery, not really a venue yet, except for some house concert things that are starting to happen.
Just played a place in Napa called Silo's Jazz Bar. That is a great place, great sound, great staff, great food!
Lost on Main in Chico is good
The Independent and Hotel Utah are my favorites in SF, and Beckett's Irish Pub in Berkeley is my fav East Bay place, (best crowd in the world there, and the staff is awesome)

new to this forum...greetings
Venues are like apples and oranges....both are good but can't always be compared. Jazz would be out of place at On the Y, as well as metal at JB's.
The worst trend is coffee houses trying to book big shows -- 3 bands' members fills the place up already, not much room for a paying crowd.
The Kennel Club is a really cool venue---big stage, good sound, neat interior design, but it sucks for location, no built in crowd, and it has management issues---is it even booking anymore ?
Blue Lamp is a really good venue --nothing bad to say about it.
Old Ironsides can have good crowds, depending on the bill, but it's bar area is really detached from the stage.
The Owl Club in Roseville is a really neat room, but it's disadvantage is it's on the second floor, hard to find, out of the way, and has no built in crowd.
Cosmik Cafe in Placerville -- same thing....neat venue ! but reaaaaly out of the way.
Haven't played Harlows....but I've enjoyed shows there.

i liked playing the press club when ira was doing sound, but now the new guy is a little bit, how i say, careless.
i like harlows cuz jon the sound guy is a blast, but the room itself can sound weird without a full house.
cosmic cafe is an awesome little shelf of a place, sound system is a bit of a joke, but placerville kids always show love for local bands. the owner is off her rocker but the booking agent there is a sweetheart.
really, my favorite places to play are galleries and house shows, little insta-clubs where the crowd isnt just there to get drunk. theres a special secret venue in town now that has some of the best and brightest experimental, punk, folk, and indie artists in the area involved and its drawing some real crowds and alot of awesome touring bands. that hole inthe wall is probobly my favorite new venue.
