I heard from Ron Smith that Mitch passed away earlier this week. A real giant of a player and a sweet guy. I didn't go hear him often enough, didn't pick up near enough from his monstrous playing, and we never got the let's-build-a-few-Deluxes-on-steroids thing off the ground, but I do remember the good occasions I spent with him.
Very memorable Mitch story: my daughter & I went together to our first Hardly Strictly Bluegrass several years back, and after arriving at Golden Gate Park with about 75,000 other people, we run right into Mitch - who practically grabbed us by the arms to go see the Coward Brothers, who turned out to be Elvis Costello & T-Bone Burnett and a cast of dozens. On the way, he regaled us with a story I'd never heard about the Haight-Ashbury apartment he'd kept for years until the owner found out about the Washington pad and booted him... too funny! Rest in peace, Mitch!

I jammed with Mitch many times. He was a great player and will be missed by us all. Sad news indeed.
