Have you tried Audacity? I have been using it for nearly all my recording needs for a few years now. It is freeware and pretty powerful freeware at that. It is also very much like an old fashioned tape recorder as far as the controls go. It's pretty well idiot proof, and I can prove it!
I have used; Cakewalk, Garageband and Cubase and by far Audacity is more user friendly. It has a virtually unlimited number of tracks, great effects and did I mention that it's free? They just released version 1.3.7 today & I have been giving it a going over today. Some pretty substantial problems addressed in the upgrade or "fix" if you will.
If anyone is interested in finding out more, just google the name. If you have any specific question, feel free to contact me & I'll do what I can to walk you through it.
It really is great for the home recording guy or gal that doesn't want to break the bank on expensive multi-track recording software. Peace out.

My son introduced me to Audacity several months ago. Highly recomended.
I was learning a song, and needed to change the key without affecting the tempo. My CD player has the ability to change a songs key but it changes the tempo as well.
It's great and highly recomended for any musician.

Update to my previous post.
I wanted to put my regular email address up here in case anyone wants to contact me regarding the use of Audacity (or anything else musically related). I don't check this message board everyday & I hate to think that someone may have asked me a question and is patiently awaiting a response and I don't even know that there is a question waiting for me.
So, my email address is: guitarteacher916@yahoo.com
I do not claim to be an expert with the Audacity program, but I will help anyone as I can with it. As far as I am concerned, it is part of my job as a musician to help other musicians along their musical path as much as I can. I have bills to pay just like everyone else, so I can't avail myself at all times, but I am willing to help anyone when I am able.
Just doing my part to keep the music flowing.
