I don't see many of his old runnin' partners these days, so this news took me by surprise - Marshall, TX made Omar an offer he couldn't refuse - become the town's artist-in-residence, including residence! I'm happy for him, and I know a lot of local fans can stop worrying about his welfare. www.npr.org/2011/01/17/132963...ods-of-americaSome of my musical regrets include beating myself up for not wheedling my way into playing with more of our local elders before they were gone. It wasn't for lack of trying - I did play with Gene Chambers several times and he was always a prince, but anytime I went to Heartsman's jams, he took that time to leave the stage, and sometimes the club! For whatever reason, Omar's and my paths never seemed to cross. I could have sought out his counsel and talent, but I think never really got past his Sac Blues Festival appearance where, in front of a local and adoring audience, he had to knock the house band's (Rhythmtown-Jive) collective dicks in the dirt and stop a song, re-starting it by pounding his foot while saying "it goes like this, M-F'ers!". This after the boys had backed Johnnie Johnson to an ecstatic peak. Classic clutching-defeat-from-the-jaws-of-victory stunt.

I have been fortunate to play with quite a few of the "elder Statesman", Omar especially. Learned much from Omar, Frankie Lee, Gene Chambers, Johnny Heartsman, Freddy Roulette, Martin Fierro, Sonny Rhodes, Bobby G Sr and others, whether I played many times with them or just a few. You can't buy that stuff at any music school.
Your link is broken, fill me in if you can!

That is so great. Omar came up and sang with my band at the Torch Club one night. I'll never forget that. He deserves the accolades.
