I'm looking for what my fellow musicians would think about covering a tune by "The Band".Although they have so may great songs I am specifically asking do you think that "Forbidden Fruit" or "Ophelia" would go over best at a bar type gig.My band does mainly songs about woman so i'm thinking Ophelia but the other one is a "Bad ass tune" and they both groove. If you found the time to read this do you think that maybe neither of these songs would do well at a gig?I figured If you're just checking things out throw your opinion my way. Thanks and good things to all!

I think it depends on the gig. if you got a house full of music lovers, I think anything by the Band(one of the greatest) would be spot on. But if you are playing to a bunch of citizens, you might want to stick to the radio hits or at least more well known. One tune that gets covered a lot cause it flat out rocks is The Shape I'm In. The Band's writing goes deep.

Thanks for your input. The shape i'm in has an undeniable groove. As I listen to Forbidden Fruit-Robbie Robertson has some pretty dead on harmonics-I don't know I'd do the song justice but shape i'm in is not so technically structured. Thanks for the input.

after hearing the Band and the Black Crowes tear it up, I'd be champing at the bit to do a version of their cover of "Don't Do It". It doesn't really have any of the 4 magic dance beats that even a caveman can dance to, but I think it would pass the Clamper test (no offense intended - my departed pappy was ECV). www.youtube.com/watch?v=11Y987Uf1wY

Yes The Crowes do a great version of "Don't Do It". Cool to see Rich sing some on this one.

My band does Don't Do It in pretty much the arrangement from The Band. The guys who sing (there are injunctions in six states that prevent me from even trying in the shower) have to cheat a little with only two of them singing the "pleeeeazes" while David gets a breath for the other lines, so The Band must have had quite the lung power. And you should at least listen to the original by Marvin, which is more uptempo. But for really uptempo find him on a live cut. When they did those Watt/Stax review shows it was like they were getting paid by how many songs they could fit into a set.
