OK, I asked earlier about covers vs. originals and got some good information here and in private emails.
Something I've noticed recently on Craigslist required me to ask this question...
Why create a tribute band with a distinctive vocalist...without starting with the vocalist? Scorpions...Black Sabbath, Steely Dan...these are not bands with easily replaceable vocalists. I would think (and maybe I'm off the mark) that before someone would build a band around tributing these bands, one would be sure they had the vocalist in place. These are all artists who, while unique in their own right, have musical stylings that would allow someone with the skills to play them the ability to play lots of other things. I would think that bands with those types of skills would be a bit more flexible with their choice of vocalists. Am I missing something.

You are so right I approched it exactly the way you say Cris. I've been playing in a cover band with a guy who has an uncannilly similar voice to Huey Lews. It's not something he tries, it's just the nature of him. So armed with that talent we've put together a Huey Lewis Tribute called Super Huey. you can go to www.superhueylive.com and see and hear samples. Based on the demo's we've booked 3 gigs already and we've only had 4 rehersals. (need to get going on that) need to work with your strengths
