Can someone give me an idea about this MOCO thing that is being blasted about lately?

I won't comment on the MOCO flap, I find it embarrassing, but I will say publicly that in my experience, negativity feeds on itself, oftentimes spiraling downwards until something bad has happened. NOW is the time to say NO to negativity, not later. There is an incredible amount of talent in the area, lets enjoy it. Don't get sucked in by the whiners that bemoan Sacramento, they'd be whiners anywhere. Play what's in your heart, and do the best you can. Then if you can, help someone else, you'll find that positive energy also feeds on itself, oftentimes spiraling upwards until something good has happened.

Ok, I didn't want to start anything, I just wanted to know what MOCO meant. There are obviously strong opinions, but I am personally clueless and just wanted to know.. in as neutral a manner as possible, what MOCO means and what it is supposed to be about.

In response to the reply by poster who calls himself "defiance" I can only scratch my head and wonder....? I have never posted jam rules on CL in my life, nor has anyone EVER been shorted at the jams for playing a "bad riff". Of course, seasoned players usually don't disturb people between songs, but if a newcomer needs advice on stage ettiquette it is given. I can call the jam any darn thing I want, if you choose to believe I'm not there, I guess that's OK... BTW, don't be mislead by "defiance" into thinking I run a "blues jam". All good music is welcome. Defiance, you should think these things out before you start ankle biting. You make yourself look very hypocritical talking all this conservative political stuff, then taking on a very Fidel Castro managment style telling ME how to run MY business. Pick one personality and get back to us...

Cris,
I belive that MOCO is short for Musician's Owners Co-op and the "product positioning" is that this is a "business entitity" of musicians and club owners working together to promote live music venues. Like all products, it has its promoters and it has its detractors. If you are into Craig's List, it is mostly detractors...but C/L's seems to be a haven for negative vibes so take that for what it is. My recommendation......go to a jam (enough times to fairly evaluate) and decide whether you like it enough to return or do not like it and not return. I know....crazy talk!

Thanks, TJ.
I appreciate you giving me a straight answer and some context for the rancor.
Mrfoster, are you the Steve Foster that hosts the jam at Louie's? If you are, thank you too. I've played there a couple of times with a band that was just beginning to get out there, and I found you and the audience welcoming and friendly.

Hi Cris, Yes, I'm the Steve from the jam. I'm really happy to hear words like "welcoming and friendly". That's what we're after :-) Thank You, Steve

I just wanted to say that if you have been following the cl palaver, you would see that its mostly the MOCO chaps spewing the negativity. And at a show I was on last night we were basically threatened by a MOCO rep.

Guys, this happened. The MOCO's are stranger than fiction. But it was not physical(wonder if it could come to that). He just threatened to steal our gig by making the owner a deal he can't refuse.
There is more MOCO stuff on craigslist.

There is more MOCO stuff on craigslist. Wow, some pretty low class stuff going on. I remember being asked about possibly participating in this moco thing a few months back and now really glad I did not. Wonder what kind of deal a guy could actually offer a club to steal a gig away from someone. Only thing I could think of that the owner would think about would be cash and that would be pretty stupid on moco's part. Not saying this is the case but Pay to play = hardup for a gig.

All true, bro. And trust me, it would hard to undercut us there.
I think the chickens will come home to roost soon. A lot of feathers have been ruffled(you like the bird metaphors?). I hope so at any rate. It makes us all look bad.

When the dust all settles, what I take away from all of this is that..........I must get back into a band.
